An energy innovation Company called Tesla, who make electric cars, have announced that they plan to create solar-powered batteries for homes and businesses. They claim that this could change the entire energy infrastructure of the world. It will be a critical move towards enabling a zero emission power generation and move away from fossil fuels such as coal and oil and will help more people move towards renewable energy.
What are the options
There will be two battery options – the 7 kWh Powerwall battery (approx £1954 before installation) which is wall -mounted for people using solar power. There is also a 10kWh battery called the Powerpack (no price advised yet) which is for businesses, providing power when it is needed in the event of a power cut. Along with the lithium-ion battery pack would be a liquid thermal control system and software which would receive dispatch commands from a solar inverter and could be integrated with the local grid. One of the Tesla board members has stated that the forthcoming battery would reduce domestic bills by using energy more efficiently. It would charge itself either by collecting solar energy or bringing it from the power grid at a cheaper time, at about 3am in the morning as opposed to the afternoon when electricity prices are higher.
When will these be available
They are expected to start shipping these batteries to installers in the US this summer. They should be available in the UK in the autumn.
